Description

The India Tyre Factory, located on Greenock Road in Inchinnan, was built between 1929 and 1930 in the Art Deco style, with five additional bays added at each end around 1955, maintaining the same architectural style. The original structure consists of 15 bays and features raised and recessed end pylons, standing two storeys tall. It is constructed from reinforced concrete and is decorated with red, green, gold, and block glazed tiles.

The bays are separated by large chamfered piers, which have glazed tile decorations at their bases and capitals, and a black glazed plinth. There is a red and black cill band beneath the ground floor windows, a thin green band course between the storeys, and a wider band over the first floor and around the vertical framing of the narrow bays. The central door is set within a coloured, banded architrave. Inside the entrance vestibule, there is a black, green, and red terrazzo floor featuring the inlaid words "India, Inchinnan Scotland." All windows are metal framed and recessed, except for those in the outer half bays of the original block. The building has a stepped parapet that is raised at the centre above the words "India of Inchinnan." The end pylons include doors at the ground level and feature bold stylised corbelled angles. The original 1950s lettering "India Tyres" is still visible on the eastern gable end.

The factory is complemented by low curved walls that enclose a forecourt paved with white marble, which is surrounded by a geometric cast-iron rail and original lamp standards. Additionally, there are low pylon-shaped piers and cast-iron rails forming the front retaining wall along the main road.
