Description
4 Canal Crescent and 1-2 Charterhouse Lane is a mid-19th century, two-storey building located on a narrow corner site. The flanks are constructed from squared and coursed rubble, while the end elevation features polished ashlar. The building has a base course, a string course along Charterhouse Lane, and an eaves course, with in-and-out quoins.
On the east elevation, there is a single-bay pilastered timber shopfront topped with a cornice and a panel decorated with rinceau above it. The first floor has a bipartite architraved window, and the gablet is adorned with a carved roundel at the center and palm-leaf antefixae that break the eaves.
The south elevation facing Charterhouse Lane has three bays, featuring a central door flanked by windows set in round-arched recesses at the ground level. The first-floor windows have recessed architraves.
The north elevation on Canal Crescent includes a round-headed panel above the door in the first bay, with quoins separating the first and second bays.
Most of the first-floor windows are timber sash and case with predominantly 12-pane glazing, while the round-arched shopfront openings on Charterhouse Lane have plate glass. The building has a piend roof covered with grey slate at the corner bay, and the remaining two bays have half-piended roofs, with skews and skewputs on the west gable. There is a coped end stack with clay cans and a tall wall-head stack at the northwest angle, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
