Description
Perth Methodist Church, located on Scott Street, was designed by Alexander Petrie and built between 1879 and 1880. This small Gothic-style church features a prominent three-stage steeple on the street side, topped with an octagonal stone spire. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked stugged sandstone, accented with polished ashlar dressings. It includes hoodmouldings with labelstops and shouldered angle buttressing, along with a modillioned eaves course.
The principal elevation faces east and has steps leading to the main entrance. On either side of the entrance are bipartite pointed-arch windows, with blind rosette roundels positioned above them. The belfry stage is distinguished by lucarnes and is crowned with the octagonal stone spire, which features patterned bands.
The north and south side elevations are divided by buttresses, and off-centre gables rise above the wallhead, each with a round window in the centre and a Star of David motif. The church has vestry and kitchen wings on the north and south sides, respectively, which form transepts. There are later additions to the rear of the building, creating a rough T-plan.
The roof is covered with grey slate, and the cast-iron rainwater goods are in place, along with coped skews.
Inside, the pulpit was originally located at the west end beneath a round window but has since been truncated and moved to the north. A stained glass round window at the west features a double portrait of John and Charles Wesley with the inscription "The Best Of All Is God Is With Us." There are abstract pattern windows, created in 1982 by Vanessa Ohyma, on the north and south walls, and the church retains its original timber pews.
