Description

28 Brown Street in Blairgowrie is a house dating from around 1830, with a possible addition to the rear from the mid to late 19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure featuring a notable banking hall added later. The exterior is constructed of coursed, squared rubble with stone cills, while the sides and rear are made of rubble. The building has base and eaves courses.

The principal elevation faces northeast and is symmetrical. The central bay on the ground floor has a moulded doorway with a panelled timber door and a plate glass fanlight, flanked by windows in the side bays. The first floor has regular fenestration, and there are two modern rooflights above.

The southwest rear elevation includes a full-width lower piend-roofed extension or wing, featuring a modern glazed door on the left and a further harled piend-roofed projection on the right, which was formerly ancillary.

The southeast and northwest elevations are blank gabled walls with garages attached at ground level. The building has out-of-character PVCu glazing and is topped with grey slates. It features coped ashlar stacks with thackstanes and some cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews with block skewputts.

Inside, there is a rare and largely intact banking hall, which includes decorative plasterwork cornices and a central rose. The vertically-panelled walls are adorned with a fine carved wood-effect Lincrusta dado that depicts various insects, birds, and flowers. The doors and soffits have stencilled panels. There is a timber fire surround (not original) with flanking wall cupboards; the left cupboard is lined with shelves and pigeon holes, while the right cupboard contains a strong room. Additionally, there is a decorative cast-iron inlet vent for the air conditioning system and push-buttons for a communication system.
