Description
The Municipal Buildings at 2 High Street in Perth were designed by George P K Young in 1899, showcasing a Renaissance style reminiscent of JJ Burnet. The building is three stories tall, with a modern set-back attic floor. It features seven windows facing High Street (originally four) and eight windows on Tay Street, with the end bays advanced and channelled. The corner bay is highlighted by an aediculed drum and a dome above.
On the ground floor, there are arched openings supported by three Roman Doric pilasters on the Tay Street frontage and two on the main entrance in the center bay on High Street. The entrance features blocked Doric columns and crouching figures at the entablature, topped with a broken segmental pediment. The first-floor windows are elaborately designed with key blocks and pediments, made from dwarf red sandstone. The second floor is in the Ionic order and includes a balustraded parapet. A modern west addition, completed in 1957-58, extends the facade into Watergate.
