Description

The Free Church on Taybridge Road in Aberfeldy was built in 1843 and features a two-stage spired tower and a rectangular church hall, designed in a simple Tudor Gothic style. The structure is made of chlorite-slate rubble with stone cills and squared rubble, accented with contrasting ashlar dressings. Architectural details include hoodmoulds, voussoirs, and two-stage diagonal buttresses.

The tower's first stage has a hoodmoulded panelled timber door with a shaped plate glass fanlight and a steep pediment on the west side. There are paired blocked lights on the south side and large timber-louvered openings on each face above. The reduced second stage features a clock on each face and splayed angles, with a band course above that leads to a pedimented cornice and a ribbed lead spire topped with a decorative cast-iron weathervane.

The church hall has a west elevation with four bays, featuring tall windows in the outer bays. The penultimate bay on the left has a small window beneath a catslide roof, adjacent to the tower. The south elevation is gabled, showcasing two tall pointed-arch windows flanking a low link section to the smaller hall. The east (rear) elevation has been altered, with harled bays on the right and center, and flat-roofed bays on the left.

The interior of the church hall has been modernized. The smaller hall has a gabled west entrance elevation with a two-leaf boarded timber door and a margined fanlight in the left bay, along with a hoodmoulded pointed-arched window to the right and a small glazed oculus in the center. The east (rear) elevation features a piend roof with two large windows. Inside, there is a good decorative scheme, including some boarded dadoes and architraved doors. A marble memorial tablet commemorates 'REV DONALD ROBERT CLARKE', who was the pastor for 40 years and died on May 13, 1883.
