Description

This is an 1844 former church built in a simple Gothic style, along with a later small hall. The church is constructed of stugged squared and snecked rubble stone with smooth ashlar dressings. A deep base course runs along the base of the building. The main entrance features a deeply-moulded doorpiece with stop-chamfered voussoirs, and decorative label stops. The tower is set back on the right of the north-west (principal) elevation, which is gabled and features a large, hoodmoulded three-light window set into a tracery-effect panel, topped with a stone Celtic cross finial.

The tower’s north-west face has steps leading to a boarded timber door with decorative ironwork hinges and a traceried fanlight above. There are two closely-spaced windows to the west, and a single light to the south. The second stage of the tower has a square-headed bipartite window to the north, west and south. The third stage of the tower has hoodmoulded louvered tripartite openings to each face, set into panels, and a cornice with stylised corbels at the centre, topped with a crenellated parapet and pinnacled angles.

The southwest elevation has a finialled gable with a projecting, raised-centre tripartite window to the right of centre, and three set-back windows to the left. The tower is located on the outer left. A lower, slightly set-back hall is on the outer right, with disabled access to a shoulder-arched door and a bipartite window. The northeastern elevation features a finialled gable with a raised-centre three-light window to the left, four set-back windows to the right, and three square-headed windows to a lower bay on the outer left. The southeastern elevation has an advanced, finialled gable with a small, traceried circular window over later, projecting, asymmetrically-fenestrated bays near the boundary wall.

Decorative astragalled traceried glazing is used in the circular window on the southeast and the fanlight over the tower door. Multi-pane, leaded glazing is found in the raised-centre three-light windows and in a bipartite window on the southwest. Elsewhere, there is three-pane glazing, with some frosted glass, except for the southeast and northeast windows of the small hall, which have replacement windows. The roof is covered with graded grey slates and decorative terracotta ridge tiles. The building has cast-iron downpipes with decorative square-section gutters, rainwater hoppers and fixings.

Inside, the church has plain moulded cornices, boarded timber dadoes, hoodmoulded nave windows, and a Queenpost truss roof. A shallow chancel arch has a stage and a traceried window, along with similar shallow side chapels. Some original timber bench pews are still present at the sides. Low, saddleback-coped rubble boundary walls enclose the site.
