Grammar School, 36 Broad Street, Kirkwall

The Grammar School, located at 36 Broad Street in Kirkwall, is an 18th-century building that may include some earlier elements and has undergone later alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular house with a near-symmetrical design and crowstepped gables. The building features a pitched-roofed entrance porch on the north side, adjacent to a shop on the west and the southwest corner of Number 3 Palace Road, which is listed separately. The exterior is harled with block cills.

On the north elevation, the principal entrance features a part-glazed modern door located in the central bay at ground level, with a small window above on the first floor. There is a window in each floor of the bay to the right, while the bay to the left has non-aligned windows on each floor.

The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a modern timber panelled door offset to the right of centre at ground level and a centrally placed window on the first floor. There is a window in each floor of the bay to the right, and a two-storey range projects south at a right angle from the bay to the left.

The building includes 12-pane timber sash and case windows and small rooflights on the south pitch. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a stone ridge, with harled, corniced, and blocked gablehead stacks on the east and west sides. The rainwater goods are a mix of uPVC and cast iron. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
