Description

14 Victoria Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century, L-plan house that may include some earlier elements and has undergone later alterations. The building has three stories and features a two-bay crow-stepped gable end facing the street, with a two-storey short arm at the rear. The street-facing and short arm sides are harled, while the south side is cement-rendered and lined. A modern shop fascia is located between the ground and first floors.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a modern glazed door set back in the center at ground level, flanked by large shop windows. Above, each bay has a window on every floor, and there is a gablehead stack.

The south (side) elevation is irregular with five bays. A part-glazed modern door is located at ground level in the center bay. There are windows at the first and second floors in the two bays to the left. The bay to the right of center has an enlarged window at ground level and a window above on each floor. A forestair runs along the short arm of the L, with a modern part-glazed door at the first floor in the penultimate bay to the right. The short arm projects from the ground in the outer right bay, with a window to the main block above on the second floor.

On the short arm's west elevation, there is a deep-set boarded door at ground level and a window above at the first floor. The south side elevation has a window offset to the left at the first floor and a gablehead stack.

The building features 12- and 4-pane timber sash and case windows, as well as a timber-framed window with a top-hung upper light in the short arm. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a traditional stone-slated easing course, with a stone slate roof on the short arm and stone ridges. The gablehead stacks on the east and west sides are harled and corniced, while the rainwater goods are predominantly uPVC, with some cast-iron remnants.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
