Description
22 Victoria Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century building with later alterations. It is a two-storey and attic structure with a rectangular plan and crow-stepped gables, forming a small terrace of two dwellings that have been converted into shops on the ground floor. The left side features a two-bay house (Numbers 22 and 24), while the right side has a three-bay house (Number 26). The ground floor is cement-rendered and lined, while the upper floors are harled.
The principal elevation has a grouping of bays in a 2-3 arrangement. On the left, the two-bay group includes two modern timber panelled doors set closely together, with letterbox fanlights above in the bay to the right, and a window on the first floor above. There is an enlarged shop window in the left bay at ground level, with a corresponding window above. The three-bay group on the right features a deep-set architraved small-pane door in the centre bay at ground level, with a window above. There is also an enlarged window at ground level in the right bay, and a window above it, along with a window in the right bay on each floor.
The north side elevation has Numbers 16-20, which are not listed, abutting to the left of centre. There is a window in the right bay on each floor, an attic window, and a gablehead stack. The south side elevation is blank with a blocked attic window to the left of the gable and a gablehead stack.
The ground floor of Numbers 22 and 24 features modern shop windows, while the other windows are timber-framed with top-hung upper lights. The roof is covered with grey slate, has a stone ridge, and features harled, corniced gablehead and ridge stacks, along with uPVC rainwater goods.
The interior has been converted into shops on the ground floor, with the upper floors remaining unseen since 1998.
