Description

Sunnybank, located at 17-18 Hillside Road in Stromness, is a pair of houses built in the late 18th century, with some later alterations. The buildings are two stories high and have a rectangular plan with crowstepped gables. The northern house is symmetrical with three bays, while the southern house is asymmetrical with two bays. The exterior is harled with cement-rendered dressings, featuring a base course and an eaves course, and the openings have plain margins.

On the east elevation, the northern house has a modern glazed door at ground level in the center bay, with a window above it on the first floor. There is a window in each floor of the flanking bays. The southern house features a pitch-roofed porch with a modern glazed door in the right bay, along with windows in each flanking return and in the left bay on both floors.

The south elevation has a single bay crowstepped gabled wall, with a window on each floor positioned to the right and a gablehead stack above. The windows are modern 4-pane timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slate, including the porch, and there are stone ridges and harled, coped gablehead stacks on both the northern and southern ends. The rainwater goods are made of uPVC.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.

There is also a single-storey outbuilding located to the northeast of the main house. This outbuilding has a five-bay asymmetrical rectangular plan and features a gable end facing the street. It is constructed of harl-pointed rubble. The principal elevation has a boarded door with a flanking window in the bays to the left of center, a boarded window in the right bay, and a boarded door in the outer right bay. The outbuilding has fixed timber-framed windows and a graded Caithness slate roof with a stone ridge.

The boundary wall along the eastern edge of the property is made of rubble and features a square-plan pier with a stepped rubble cap at the end. There is a replacement rubble wall adjoining it, along with a replacement square-plan pier at the southeast angle.
