Description

The former gas decontamination station building at Hoy, Lyness, was constructed by the Directorate of Works around 1939. It is a rectangular-plan brick structure located in an open landscape on the western perimeter of the former Royal Naval base at Lyness. The west elevation features an advanced central section with two openings, flanked by wings on either side that each have a single opening set back. There is also a brick blast wall to the right. The north and south elevations display plain gable walls. The east elevation has openings on the right and left but no window openings. The building has a flat roof with a raised central section that was formerly a water tower, along with a brick stack. The roof level slightly lowers at the end bays. The interior was observed in 2013, revealing that most internal fixtures and fittings have been removed, although the original floor plan remains evident.
