Description
19 Main Street in Stane is a former police station built in 1865. It is a 2-storey building with a basement and has a rectangular plan. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with bull-facing on the quoins and stugged margins.
The principal elevation features stone steps leading to a two-leaf main door, which has a letterbox fanlight and a bull-faced panel above. The windows are arranged regularly, with a small window in the center of the first floor.
The rear elevation is three-storey with irregular window placement, including a tall modern stair window in the center. There is a door at the center of the ground floor and stone steps leading to a wooden lean-to porch located to the left of the first floor.
The east side elevation also has irregular fenestration, while the west side features irregular window placement with two small barred windows at the ground level. The building has modern double glazing and a roof covered with grey slates. The coped skews have shouldered skewputts, and there are coped gable end stacks along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the ground and first floors were converted into a dwelling house in 1962. The basement contains three brick vaulted cells on the west side and a laundry room on the east side.
The boundary wall surrounding the property is low and features a decorative cast-iron gate and railings, constructed from coped, bull-faced ashlar coursers.
