Description
The Shotts Ironworks, established in 1802, features the remaining structures of an iron-smelting facility.
The Furnace Bank consists of a tall masonry retaining wall made of snecked cream sandstone rubble, which has been heightened and lengthened since its original construction in 1801. At the northern end, there are two round-headed arched recesses, while the center has five small rectangular iron-lined openings. An iron pipe projects from the southern end. The current appearance of the bank is a result of improvements made by the Scottish Development Agency in the 1980s.
The Hot Blast Tower, likely built between 1860 and 1880, is a seven-storey campanile made of red brick. It features small round-headed windows set in inset panels and has a machiculated and castellated parapet. The window voussoirs are made of white brick.
