Description

18-20 Broomknoll Street in Airdrie is a two-storey, four-bay tenement building dating from around 1860. It has a rectangular plan and features a gabled, plain classical design with shops on the ground floor. The facade is made of yellow ashlar sandstone, while the sides and rear are constructed from squared and snecked rubble. Notable architectural details include a base course, a dividing band between the first and second storeys, an eaves course, and profiled guttering. The upper storey windows are adorned with lugged cavetto moulded architraves.

On the principal elevation, there is a shouldered-arched carriage entrance located in the outer left bay, with plate glass shop fronts for a single bay shop in the centre and a three-bay symmetrical shop to the right. An architraved entrance features a projecting canopy. The rear elevation has irregular fenestration, while both side elevations are obscured by adjacent buildings.

Inside, the ground floor has modern shop fittings, and the upper storey is currently used as offices. The building is fitted with plate glass sash and case windows, grey slates, lead flashing, cast-iron rainwater goods, and coped gable stacks.
