Description

The building at 83 Camp Road, Motherwell, is a complex structure with origins in 1737, expanded in 1765, and with later 19th-century and modern additions. It is a 2-storey, single-bay, rectangular-plan gabled folly, complicated by various single-storey additions.

The central core of the building, dating to 1737, is constructed from squared and droved yellow sandstone. It features a cavetto moulded eaves course, raised quoins, and architraved windows. The north-east elevation has a window to the ground floor and a modern inscription in cement above. The pedimented gable end has a blind oculus in the tympanum, an urn finial at the apex, and an octagonal coped stack to the left and an urn to the right. The south-west elevation has a window on the first floor and a blocked doorway to the right; the ground floor is obscured by a later addition. The south-east elevation has a window on the first floor, with the ground obscured by a modern addition. The north-west elevation is largely hidden by a late 19th-century addition.

The south-west wing, constructed in 1765, is a single-storey, 2-bay, square-plan wing with a flat roof and castellated parapets with corbelled bartizans. It is built with squared and droved yellow sandstone courses, raised quoins, and architraved windows with projecting keystones. The south-east (principal) elevation has a coped, shouldered pediment to the parapet, largely hidden by a modern addition. The south-west elevation has regular fenestration, while the north-east elevation is obscured by the central core. The north-west elevation has four-pane sash and case windows. The roof has a modern concrete skim and cast-iron rainwater goods.

A later 19th-century wing is located on the north-west side. This single-bay, single-storey, half-gabled stair tower has an attic and a crowstepped gable. The north-west elevation features a smaller single-storey, half-gabled projection; coped crowsteps; a tall window to the left return, and a blind square window to the right return. The south-east, south-west and north-east elevations are obscured by the central core and the south-west addition. The upper floor has a window, and the windows are modern timber framed with plate glass. The roof is slate with lead flashing, and there is a large modern rooflight.

A large, modern, single-storey, 4-bay, flat-roofed addition occupies the south-east side. It has a coped, pedimented parapet, and is harled with imitation stone margins; it incorporates an eaves height string course, raised quoins, and architraved openings. The south-east (principal) elevation has regular fenestration and a two-leaf timber door in the third bay. The parapet is centered on a shouldered pediment and an inscribed concrete panel reading ‘CAMP COTTAGE, 1738’. The north-west elevation is obscured by the adjoining south-west addition and central core while the south-west (side) elevation features a modern glass conservatory, and the north-east (side) elevation has two small windows to the right. It mainly has modern double glazed sash and case windows, and an asphalt roof.

The interior of the building was not inspected in 2001.
