Description
North Lodge, located at 225 Manse Road in Motherwell, is a Baronial-style lodge designed by R W Billings between 1858 and 1859. This single-storey building with an attic features a three-bay rectangular plan and is constructed from coursed yellow sandstone. It showcases stylised crowsteps and unusual skewputts, along with prominent gabled dormerheads that break the eaves of the first-floor windows. The building has a base course, eaves course, and chamfered margins around its openings.
The principal elevation features a slightly advanced gabled porch at the center, which has a small plinth at the apex, skewputts, and a carved motif at the gablehead. The central entrance consists of a shouldered timber door. To the right is a small window, while to the left is an advanced triangular-plan bipartite window, all beneath a piended stone roof. The central gabled dormer, which breaks the eaves, contains a hoodmoulded pointed arch window topped with a ball finial. The eaves are overhanging with exposed rafters.
The rear elevation has a modern three-bay flat-roof extension. The north side elevation features an advanced triangular-plan bipartite window to the right and two pointed arch windows at the gablehead, with the left window being narrower. The south side elevation includes a single-storey advanced flat-roof bay with a moulded coped parapet, a shouldered window at the left gablehead, and a narrow pointed arch window to the right.
The interior was not seen in 2001. The lodge has modern eight-pane timber windows with top hoppers, grey slate roofing with lead flashing, and large rooflights. It features moulded coped gable end stacks with decorative octagonal cans and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The gatepiers consist of square-plan columns made of squared and tooled sandstone coursers, framed panels, a moulded cornice, ogee caps, and ball finials. These were formerly the entrance gates to the Dalzell estate. The gates and railings display unusual wrought-iron work.
