Description
Old Dalziel Manse in Motherwell is an early 19th-century manse that is two stories high and has a rectangular plan, featuring three bays and single-storey flanking offices. The building is constructed from droved, squared yellow sandstone coursers with ashlar sandstone dressings, including a base course, cill course, and a projecting cavetto moulded cornice. The corner margins and architraved openings are regular in their fenestration.
On the southwest (principal) elevation, there are three stone steps leading to a tall door with a cornice, flanked by slender pilasters. The door is a two-leaf panelled type with a nine-light rectangular fanlight above it. A small porch leads to an astragal glazed inner door beneath a semicircular arched fanlight. The first floor features windows at eaves height.
The northeast (rear) elevation has varied and irregular fenestration, with a door located to the centre left beneath a letterbox fanlight. The northwest (side) elevation includes a single-storey addition at the centre right with a rectangular plan and a pavilion roof. There is a blocked doorway in the centre flanked by windows, with an additional window on the right return. The southeast (side) elevation also has a single-storey addition at the centre right, featuring a rectangular plan and a pavilion roof, with a window to the left, a window on the left return, and a window and doorway on the right return.
The windows throughout the building are predominantly 12-pane sash and case types. The roof is covered with grey slates, featuring lead flashing, skews, and moulded coping on the gable end stacks, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 2001.
Additionally, there is an early 19th-century coach house located at the rear of the manse. This single-storey, rectangular-plan structure has a gabled roof and is made from squared yellow sandstone rubble with droved sandstone quoins. The southwest elevation features twin two-leaf boarded carriage doors with strap hinges. The coach house also has a roof covered with grey slates, skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
