Description

Dalziel High School, located at 85 Crawford Street in Motherwell, was designed by JB Russell in 1913 and has undergone later alterations and additions. This two-storey, 15-bay building features a square courtyard plan and is styled in the William and Mary architectural tradition. The central entrance has a portico with a lantern above, and the building is topped with a mansard roof. It is constructed from squared and tooled discoloured yellow ashlar sandstone, accented with ashlar margins. Notable architectural elements include a base course, continuous cill courses, an eaves course, and a mutuled projecting cornice, all contributing to its regular fenestration and Scotia moulded architraves around the openings.

On the principal elevation, stone steps lead to a two-leaf panelled door topped by a semicircular fanlight, with a projecting keystone in the architrave. This entrance is flanked by Tuscan columns that support a broken entablature and pediment, above which is a low relief, figurative sculpted panel. The roof features an octagonal lantern with an ogee cap and a weather vane finial. There are four flanking bays on both the left and right sides, with advanced triple bays at the outer ends.

The rear elevation is obscured by later additions. The side elevation to the southwest has regular fenestration and a three-bay blind arcade on the outer left projecting bay, along with a boiler stack on the outer right. The northeast side elevation mirrors the southwest side.

The building has 8-pane stainless steel frame windows, grey slate roofing with lead flashing, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not seen in 2001, but it features a blind arcade leading to the central courtyard.
