Description
Monkland District Magistrates Court, located at 357 Main Street in Coatbridge, was designed by Thomas Smith and built in 1905. This two-storey building features a rectangular plan and was originally used as offices for Stewarts and Lloyds Clyde Tube Works. It is situated on sloping ground at the corner with East Stewart Street.
The exterior is constructed of red brick, enhanced with polychrome grey and cream brick banding and decorative elements, along with red ashlar sandstone dressings. The roof is a piended grey slate platform that was originally glazed over a central well, and it includes cast-iron rainwater goods. The ground floor has a grey brick base course and banding, while the upper parts of the first floor are adorned with cream brick banding. The eaves are corbelled.
The front elevation features recessed bays defined by pilasters without capitals, with paired pilasters at the center bay and the corners. The ground floor has large round-headed windows with stepped jambs, while the first floor showcases tripartite windows with mannered corbelling at the cills. The side elevations contain 3- and 4-light windows on both floors, decorated with polychrome motifs below the first-floor cills.
On the front elevation, there are two-leaf panelled doors at the center, framed by a segmental-headed doorcase with an ashlar spandrel set within a keystoned round-headed arch with stepped jambs. Above, a large tripartite window is topped with a segmental pediment that features 'SXL' in cream brick. The left and right bays each consist of a round-headed window on the ground floor and a tripartite window on the first floor. The interior has not been seen.
