Description
The site includes a ruined castle and associated walled garden, dating to circa 1609. Only the east corner of the north wall of the castle survives above ground level. Distinguishing features include dressed quoins, an elliptical gun port, a rectangular window opening, and a rubble pile on its south side. The castle’s remains are incorporated within rubble-built garden walls, enclosing a rectangular area which was probably built or rebuilt in 1817. An entrance from the south, immediately to the west of the castle, is marked by a segmental-arched gateway with wrought-iron gates. Three carved stones are positioned above the gateway: a central rectangular stone with an acroterion pediment and apex urn, inscribed "WC, CH" and dated 1817; flanking stones shaped as pediments, each topped with a ball finial, which were likely removed from the castle. A stone to the left is inscribed "WH, IB, Anno 1669," and the stone to the right displays triangular and circular motifs. There are further features of the central gateway and some square, beehive recesses in the north wall. The National Statistical Account suggests 1661 as a possible date for alterations or acquisition of the estate by Hamilton of Ardoch.
