Description

Ladyland House is a classical mansion house built around 1816 by the architect David Hamilton. It is a two-story building with a basement and attic, arranged with three bays. The house is built of rubble with ashlar dressings, and features giant clasping pilasters at all corners. The central doorway has a raised fanlight and two segmentally-headed side lights, approached by steps with a cast-iron railing. A projecting portico supported by two pairs of Roman Doric columns and an entablature provides a grand entrance. A band course runs above the basement, and a cill course defines the ground floor. Decorative glazing patterns are found throughout the windows. The building has a cornice, a blocking course, end stacks, and a low-piended slate roof.

A low, flat-roofed, two-story extension, designed by James Houston in the 20th century, adjoins the original building on the left side, echoing the original style and incorporating a small central door. A large, projecting, canted conservatory fills the rear central bay.

The interior boasts rooms with ornate plaster cornices and elaborately decorated ceilings. Greek key moulding is extensively used around architraves and on ceilings. The staircase has simply detailed cast-iron balusters, and an oval cupola above features Vitruvian scroll decoration at its base and intersecting hanging swag decoration. Several original fireplaces remain. The gatepiers are octagonal, panelled, and topped with ogee moulded corniced caps. Decorative wrought iron gates complete the ensemble. Original plans are held by the owner.
