Description

This is an 1821 stone sundial situated within the walled garden at Ladyland. The sundial features a facet-headed design, mounted on a fluted baluster pedestal. The pedestal is topped with a stylised Ionic scrolled capital. The base of the shaft is dated and bears the initials of William Cochra of Ladyland and his wife, Catherine Hamilton. Note that the capital's design resembles that of an obelisk dial, and it is thought to be a reused element from an earlier sundial. MacGibbon and Ross documented and illustrated the sundial in their Caledonian & Doric Architecture in 1887-92.
