Description

Ladyland Castle is a ruined castle dating to around 1609. Only the east corner of the north wall survives above ground level. Distinguishing features include dressed quoins, an elliptical gun port, a rectangular window opening, and a rubble pile on its south side, differentiating it from the surrounding garden wall.

The castle is incorporated with rubble-built garden walls enclosing a rectangular area, likely built or rebuilt in 1817. A segmental-arched gateway with wrought-iron gates provides access from the south, immediately west of the castle. Above the gateway are three carved stones. The central stone is rectangular with an acroterion pediment and apex urn, inscribed "WC, CH" and dated 1817. Flanking this are shaped stones, one featuring ball finials and another patterned with triangular and circular motifs. A stone on the left is inscribed "WH, IB, Anno 1669". These flanking stones were probably removed from the castle.

Central to the gateway and visible in the north wall are some square, beehive recesses. The National Statistical Account suggests 1661 as a possible date for alterations or changes in ownership related to the Hamilton of Ardoch family.
