Description

Dunlop Cottage, located at 63 Wilson Street in Beith, dates from around 1870 and is a single-storey, three-bay cottage villa. The front elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central panelled timber door with a letterbox fanlight above it, and a gable with a dummy arrow slit. On either side of the door are bipartite windows set in advanced panels. The rear of the cottage has five bays and includes a gablehead stack at the center and a modern timber door. Each gable has a single window at ground level. The front is constructed of squared and snecked stugged sandstone with stop-chamfered ashlar openings, while the sides and rear are made of rubble with dressed margins. There is a base course and bracketed eaves.

The cottage retains its original timber sash and case plate glass windows throughout, with some four-pane windows at the rear. There are modern Velux-type rooflights on both the front and rear. The roof is covered with grey slate and features three corniced ashlar gable stacks, one of which has been lost to the northeast.

Inside, the cottage has been altered, with no surviving chimneypieces and a modern stair leading to the attic rooms. There are two original part-glazed timber doors, leading to the kitchen and vestibule, which feature green and amber-coloured patterned factory glass, along with rectangular four-pane fanlights above.

The boundary walls include a sandstone rubble wall at the rear that runs east to west, topped with cast clay coping. To the left at the front, there is a squared and snecked sandstone wall with a sliding timber door.
