Description
This Roman Catholic church, originally a United Free Church and before that a First Seceder church, was built in 1910, although a datestone indicates a previous building on the site from 1816. The church is a simple example of first pointed Gothic architecture, featuring a tower at the southeast angle that rises to an octagonal steeple. The steeple has tall, open lancet windows, pointed hoodmoulds, and gargoyles. The south-facing entrance elevation is buttressed and includes a recessed, boarded door in a pointed arch, with tall triple lancet windows above it, as well as a gablehead cross. The side elevations have five bays of tall lancet windows, and there is a small vestry attached to the northeast. The exterior is constructed of bull-faced, squared pale sandstone.
The windows have leaded glazing, and the roof is covered in grey slates with straight skews, incorporating a wallhead stack.
Inside, there is a gallery on the south side, and the church features a Gothic hammerbeam roof with a boarded timber ceiling.
The church is approached through cast-iron Gothic gate piers and wrought-iron gates, decorated with a quatrefoil motif. Low, coped sandstone walls define the boundaries to the south and east.
The original church on this site was built in 1816 by the First Seceders and named after its minister, the Reverend Andrew Mitchell. In 1900, it became a United Free Church, and it was rebuilt in 1910. In 1921, it was re-purposed as Our Lady's Roman Catholic Church.
