Description
This is a mid-19th century building of two storeys and an attic, originally four bays wide, situated on Main Street, Beith. The front façade is of painted ashlar construction. It features pilastered shopfronts to the ground floor, topped by a continuous entablature; modern shop fascias now cover the original frieze. Centrally, a doorway provides access to the flats located above. The first floor has four windows, each framed by moulded, lugged architraves and raised cills, and finished with an eaves course and cornice. Two later piended and canted dormers have been added to the roof.
The rear elevation has not been inspected.
The original 12-pane timber sash and case windows have been replaced with UPVC glazing. Earlier dormer windows were originally divided into two or four panes.
The interior of the building has not been inspected.
An early 20th century photograph shows the building formerly occupied by Gavin Gibson's butchers to the left and Mrs Ferguson’s bakery to the right. The shopfronts then had large expanses of plate glass, canted into the doorways, with the proprietors’ names painted onto the frieze. The photograph also depicts the original glazing, with painted dark frames. As of 2003, the building was empty and dilapidated, with later 20th century alterations to the shopfronts, including the addition of roller shutters which detract from the façade’s quality. Despite these changes, key features such as the fine ashlar façade, the lugged window surrounds, and the pilastered shopfronts remain, justifying its preservation. The building is marked on the 1858 Ordnance Survey map and is referenced in Donald Reid’s "Old Beith" (2000).
