Description
This is a mid-18th century building on Main Street, Beith, originally consisting of two storeys and four bays, with a prominent central two-bay pedimented gable. The central doorway is recessed, featuring wide, chamfered cavetto reveals and a bracketed cornice. Flanking the doorway are shopfronts, likely dating to the late 19th century. The building has angle pilasters, straight skews and a scrolled skewput to the pedimented gable, although the apex stack is missing. The ground floor is painted, with harl above a moulded eaves cornice.
The rear elevation has an irregular pattern of windows.
The building's original features have undergone several changes over time. Plate glass shopfronts are now in place, and the original timber sash and case windows have been replaced with uPVC windows. The slate roof has been replaced with non-traditional tiles. The original skewput on the right side of the rear elevation remains.
Internally, the building was not inspected in 2003.
The building was listed in 1980 when it still had a slate roof and apex stack. At that time, a 19th-century gabled dormer was present to the left of the pedimented gable. The main elevation has been re-harled in the late 20th century, likely with cement rather than traditional lime harl. The visible changes represent a gradual erosion of the traditional features. Despite these alterations, the building is notable as a good example of an 18th-century building with a pedimented gable, a characteristic feature once more common in Beith. The statutory address is 26-30 (even numbers) Main Street.
