Description

This building, located at 61 Main Street, Beith, dates to the early 19th century with later alterations in the late 19th century. It comprises the properties at numbers 57 and 59, and a corner block at number 61. Numbers 57 and 59 are two storeys and three bays wide, facing Main Street, with two entrances at ground level alongside a shop window to the left. The first floor features three windows, with the left-hand windows being paired. The exterior is painted stucco with raised and painted margins, an eaves course, and a cornice. Number 61 is a corner block, with a curved angle at the corner and curved return elevation facing King’s Road. It has enlarged shop windows at ground level and three windows on the first floor. The corner block is constructed of lightly stugged ashlar with raised margins, again featuring an eaves course and cornice.

The windows are timber sash and case, with plate glass to the first floor of numbers 57 and 59, and smaller panes in two windows of number 61. The roof is covered with grey slates, with a piend roof over number 61, and a stone ridge.

The interior of number 59 includes a first-floor room and kitchen to the front, with two bed recesses. There is a cupboard serving as a kitchen, featuring a sink and a later decorative tiled splashback, and a chimneypiece.

The building occupies a prominent corner site at the northeast entrance from Wilson Street to Main Street. A painted sign on the stonework reads "To LARGS" with an arrow indicating the direction of King’s Road towards the coastal town, while “MAIN STREET” is painted on the south elevation. King's Road, originally known as New Road, was constructed between 1858 and 1897, cutting through Main Street at its junction with Wilson Street, necessitating the addition of the corner block. This corner block was built in a style sympathetic to the earlier buildings at numbers 57 and 59, and was never harled, reflecting a late 19th-century aesthetic. Accessed via a shared close, the first-floor flat at number 59 is largely original, consisting of a small room and kitchen, each containing a bed recess. The main room features a large chimneypiece and an adjacent bed recess for warmth.

Numbers 57 and 59 appear on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1858, while number 61 is shown on the second edition map of 1897 after the construction of King's Road.
