Description

St Palladius' Roman Catholic Church, built in 1851, is a simple Gothic church with a rectangular plan and three bays. The exterior is constructed of coursed rubble, featuring a stugged ashlar gable front with polished dressings. The central entrance has a pointed arch with moulded reveals and an ogival hood-mould that includes label-stops and a decorative finial. On either side of the door are simple pointed windows adorned with decorative Y-tracery, hood-moulds, and label stops. Above the door is a smaller window with similar ornamentation. The church is supported by stepped angle buttresses that rise to octagonal pinnacles topped with cross finials. At the apex of the gable, there is a corbelled birdcage bellcote and a short faceted spire. The east and west elevations each feature three Y-traceried windows.

The north-west corner of the church is connected to the presbytery, which was built at the same time. The presbytery is two storeys high with three bays and has an asymmetrical design. It is linked to the church by a canted bay and is made of squared snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. The left side has an advanced gable, and there is a central lean-to porch with a pointed head in the re-entrant angle. The ground floor has lying-pane sash windows with hood-moulds, while the first floor features four-pane sash windows, with the central window being smaller. There is also a window in the left gable with a hood-mould that rises to a point at the center and includes label stops. The gable has straight skews, curved skew-putts, and a stone spike finial, and the roof is slate with a piended design on the right. The interior of the church has been altered and includes a single small stained glass crucifixion panel located in the vestibule opposite the main door.
