Description

This is a circa 1808 cylindrical meridian pillar constructed of rubble. The exterior is harled, with a pointed stone for sighting positioned on the north side. It has a flat ashlar cap with a pierced upright triangular stone above. Erected by Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane for astronomical observation, it is connected to three other meridian pillars near Waterside Street in Largs, and a former observatory which has since been demolished. The statutory address is Brisbane Mains Meridian Pillar.
