Description

Netherhall House, located on Greenock Road in Largs, is a large and asymmetrical mansion built between 1876 and 1892 by architects Campbell Douglas and Sellars. This two-storey house features a basement and attic, showcasing modified baronial architectural details. Notable elements include angle-drum turrets topped with conical roofs, a tower with a pyramidal roof above the entrance, and a projecting porch with a roll-moulded round-arched opening. The windows are sash and case, featuring either 2 or 4 pane glazing, with a prominent 4-light canted bay on the long garden elevation and a 2-bay square projecting window to the north. Gabletted dormers rise from the eaves cornice, and the platform roof is adorned with cast-iron balustrading. The house has seen substantial additions, including a porch and lobby on the east elevation and a three-storey and attic wing at the southeast. It is constructed from whinstone with red ashlar dressings, and remnants of an ornate cast-iron heating system can be found in the stair hall.

Additionally, there is a single-storey gatehouse built in 1875, which has a roughly L-plan layout and features a conical-roofed round tower at the southeast corner. This gatehouse is also made of whinstone with red ashlar dressings, while the south wall and tower are harled. The west elevation includes a tall, round-headed pend that serves as the entrance to the lodge, complete with a moulded arch and hood-mould, later wrought-iron gates, and an iron sign above. There are two plaques and a single window to the right, along with a central ridge stack and a roof finished with red ridge tiles and angle finials. The east elevation features a canted bay in the re-entrant angle with the tower, although modern glazing has been installed throughout.
