Description

Brisbane Mains is a single-storey stable block built around 1807 by the architect James Gillespie. The building has a U-shaped plan with a symmetrical 11-bay south elevation.

The stables have been partially converted at the east end for domestic use; one south-facing window has been enlarged. The exterior is harled with ashlar margins, all painted. The south elevation features advanced central and outer bays, with a tall, round-arched pend centrally located within a pedimented bay. A blind oculus sits in the tympanum above the pend. Five bays flank the central bay with the two outer bays being advanced and having swept roofs. Some windows are blind, while others have dummy shutters. Most windows are square-headed, opening onto the courtyard. The east range incorporates a cartshed with segmental-arched cartways, mostly blocked. A modern porch has been added to the south range.

The building has slate roofs. Brisbane Mains was originally associated with Brisbane House, which has since been demolished. James Gillespie is also known as Gillespie Graham, a name he adopted after marrying a Graham heiress. Further details can be found in the Brisbane Manuscripts held in the Mitchell Library.
