Description
These stables, likely designed by J T Rochead around 1852, form a U-shaped block with a screen wall to the west, enclosing a courtyard covered by a glass roof. The symmetrical west elevation is a single storey and built of coursed, stugged red ashlar with polished dressings. A central, two-canted-arched carriage entrance is flanked by two blind slits, with tripartite windows in the outer bays. The screen wall’s coping is stepped over the entrance, topped by a crenellated parapet with central diamond flues. All openings are hood-moulded.
Inside, the north and south walls feature four arcaded depressed arches, and the stalls remain complete with tiled walls. A low quadrant wall steps with the ground’s slope, and the circular corniced gatepiers have domed caps.
