Description
North Lodge, part of Knock Castle, was constructed in the later 19th century. It is an asymmetrical, single-story lodge built in a roughly L-shaped plan with gabled ends. A distinctive feature is the flat-roofed, circular entrance turret located at the angle where the two wings meet.
The lodge is built of stugged red sandstone ashlar with polished sandstone dressings and roll-moulded architraves. The north elevation showcases a curved, hood-moulded and panelled door, set within a relieving arch. Above the door is a corniced tripartite window, and the advanced and gabled bay to the west has a similar crest and treatment. A small window is located to the right of the main bay. All windows are sash windows featuring leaded upper lights and sloping cills. The moulded eaves extend as a cornice over the entrance turret.
The gables are topped with ball finials, coped crowsteps and shaped skewputts. A single axial stack rises from the roof, which is covered in slate.
The lodge is surrounded by quadrant walls of red sandstone ashlar, with crenellated circular gatepiers. Ornate, patterned wrought-iron gates complete the ensemble.
