Description
Probably remodelled or rebuilt around 1852 by J.T. Rochead, the glasshouses sit within a walled garden at Knock Castle. The garden enclosure is rectangular, defined by yellow brick walls topped with red ashlar coping slabs. A long, symmetrical range of glasshouses runs along the north wall, featuring a polygonal centrepiece. A castellated turret is centrally positioned on the west wall, accessed by steps from the garden and containing four round-headed openings. A continuous string course sits above the openings, rising to a corbelled and crenellated parapet. The red ashlar gatepiers are also castellated, with wrought-iron gates. A plan of the Knock estate from 1847, held in the Strathclyde Regional Archives, shows a simpler rectangular garden enclosure on the site, with the turret noted on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1854.
