Description
Manish School, designed by Alexander Ross of Inverness around 1875, is a notable example of his standard design adapted for the Outer Isles, including the Uists. This building combines a school and a schoolhouse into one structure. The single-storey schoolhouse features an attic and has mullioned classroom windows positioned beneath jerkined roofs. The exterior is harled with slate roofs, and the windows are sash style with a 4-pane glazing pattern.
The school is primarily L-shaped, with one entrance located in a rear outshot and a porch situated in the re-entrant angle at the front. It has an axial stack. The schoolhouse has a two-bay front, consisting of a door and a single window, with a bipartite attic window in the gable head below the axial stack. Additionally, there is a detached block with four lavatory doors and a garden shed for the master. The property is enclosed by rubble-built boundary and playground walls.
