Description

No 9A Quidinish is a low, three-bay blackhouse from the late 19th century, which has been altered to include a 1960s corrugated roof and a porch that incorporates a bathroom. Despite these changes, it retains its traditional form with slightly battered walls and rounded angles. The building is located on steeply sloping ground overlooking Loch Fionnsabhagh in the Bays of Harris, adjacent to a rocky outcrop. Its walls are made of thick rubble, thinly rendered and whitewashed, featuring very deeply set small window openings.

The symmetrical northwest entrance elevation has a later porch and a ruinous bathroom outshot at the center, with a two-leaf panelled timber door behind it and windows in the flanking bays, the left one being smaller. The rear elevation, which abuts higher ground, has a tiny center window that breaks into the cut-away roof to allow light in.

The windows have a four-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case, as well as fixed windows. The roof is piended with corrugated iron, following the shallow pitch of thatch, almost forming a gambrel shape at the ends. There are solid square end stacks with cans.

Inside, there is a timber-lined passage running the length of the cottage, featuring hooks including a cow horn hook. The kitchen is equipped with a Modern Mistress stove, and the main bedroom has a cast iron fireplace. The ceiling is coved and lined with wallpaper.
