Description

This building is a house located in Rodel, Harris, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. It is likely part of a development project initiated by Captain MacLeod of Harris in the 1780s, who purchased the island from the MacLeods of Harris and moved there around 1782. The house is two stories tall with a low ground floor. A forestair leads up to the central door on the first floor, with single first-floor windows in the outer bays and small lights at the altered ground floor. The ground floor is accessed from the rear through three doors, indicating that it may have been used for storage, and it was partly utilized as stabling or a byre.

The exterior features rendered rubble, with at least one ground floor opening on the front wall blocked, and some other openings possibly altered. The unusual glazing includes 19th-century first-floor casement windows with cross-shaped principal divides, resembling a similar pattern found on the nearby corrugated iron buildings at the Rodel Hotel. The building has boarded doors throughout, a corrugated iron roof, skews, and stacks. At the rear, there is a walled close and a low, roofless rectangular-plan outbuilding set back to the right, which has a flat-arched cart opening on the side facing the close. The walls of this outbuilding are mostly blind, except for a series of slit ventilators, suggesting that it was originally used for storage. Joist holes indicate that there was once a loft storey.
