Description
The Suidheachan Shell Grit Factory in Barra was built for Sir Compton MacKenzie in 1935. It is a single-storey building with a white-harled exterior and a slate roof. The long west elevation features nearly symmetrical advanced outer bays that have piended bell-cast roofs and bipartite windows. To the east, there is a range that runs parallel to the main house, which includes large rooflights and paired circular gable-head openings. The building also has corniced stacks.
