Description

The Old Rectory in Tweed Green, Peebles, is a late 18th century house that was altered and heightened by MacGibbon & Ross in 1888. It is a two-storey and attic structure with three bays, now subdivided, and features single-storey side wings. The exterior is harled with painted ashlar dressings, raised margins, and quoins.

On the south (front) elevation, there is a central doorway with a rectangular plate glass fanlight. To the left, there is a single-storey canted bay that is a later addition with stop-chamfered reveals, and to the right, a bipartite window. The upper floor has regular fenestration, with a bipartite attic window in the centre that breaks the eaves. The side wing on the outer left has a modern glazed front.

The north (rear) elevation has irregular fenestration that has been altered, featuring two attic windows that break the eaves in dormerheads with a roll motif.

The east elevation shows the side wing and main block gabled with apex stacks. The west elevation reflects the features of the east, with a trace of a former first-floor window in the centre.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 6-pane upper sashes and either 2-pane lower sashes or 12-pane glazing. The roof is slate, with scrolled skews featuring a rope motif on the front of the main block. There are four apex stacks and thackstanes on the side wings, with the roof of the main block heightened in 1888.

The interior was not seen in 1994. The property is enclosed by a low whinstone rubble boundary wall with boulder coping.
