Description

1A Tweed Green in Peebles is a former school building constructed in 1812 and raised by one storey in 1861. It is a symmetrical, two-storey structure with three bays, built from whinstone and featuring long and short cream sandstone ashlar dressings. The sides and rear are harled, and the building has chamfered arrises.

On the south elevation, there is an advanced gabled bay at the centre, which contains a later broad two-leaf boarded door at ground level, a window on the first floor, and a framed panel in the gablehead depicting St Andrew and the cross. The flanking bays have windows at ground level and smaller windows on the first floor, positioned hard under the eaves.

The west elevation is gabled with windows on both floors shifted to the left, and it features an apex stack. The east elevation is also gabled, with windows on both floors displaced to the right and a trefoil design at the centre of the first floor. This elevation also has an apex stack. The building is fitted with six-pane timber sash and case windows, covered with purple slates, and has ashlar coped skews and corbel skewputts at the centre gable, although the finial is missing. The stacks are dressed with coped ashlar.

The interior was not seen in 1994.

To the immediate east, there is a gate made of similar materials as the building. It features a boarded door set within an ashlar coped wall, with a panel above the door displaying a shield bearing the letter G and a large ball finial.
