War Memorial, High Street, Peebles

The War Memorial on High Street in Peebles was designed by B N H Orphoot in 1922. It is a hexagonal classical pavilion with an ogee dome, featuring round-arched arcading on three sides, and is built into the east wall of the Chambers Institution courtyard. The structure is made of cream sandstone ashlar.

The exterior includes round-arched keystoned openings that are separated by shallow pilasters, along with an entablature and inscriptions on the friezes. It has a dentilled eaves cornice, a tall blocking course, and squat dies above the pilasters, which are topped with swagged urn finials. The ogival copped dome has protruding ribs and is crowned by an open columned cupola, which features a fishscale lead dome topped with a ball finial.

Inside, there is a tall Celtic-type cross adorned with multi-coloured mosaic inlay. The walls feature three panels with inscriptions bordered by mosaics, and the interior of the dome is decorated with gold-coloured tiles.
