Lewis Hotel, 9-10 North Beach, Stornoway, Lewis

The Lewis Hotel, located at 9-10 North Beach in Stornoway, Lewis, features a prominent datestone inscribed "J McK(enzie)/AR/1829" on its front wall. This tall and imposing three-storey hotel has four regular bays above the ground floor and is situated on a corner site with its gable facing Castle Street. The building is painted, with contrasting details; the thickly painted main walling is likely rendered underneath, while the dressings, scrolled skewputts, margins, rusticated quoins, and stacks are probably all made of ashlar. The hotel has a slate roof and sash windows, most of which have four-pane glazing.

On the ground floor, there is a three-bay public house bar on the left, featuring a projecting sign above, and two bays on the right (bays three and four) that align with those above. The outer first-floor windows are tripartite, likely serving to light the reception and public rooms, while the rest of the windows are single, except for a flat-roofed three-light dormer in the center that has plate-glass sashes. There is only a single window on the flank facing Castle Street at the first floor, and a much altered and modernised low rear wing. The detailing of the skewputts and stacks, which are rusticated and feature moulded cornices, is of high quality.
