Anderson's Primary School, High Street, Forres

Anderson's Primary School, located on High Street in Forres, was designed by William Robertson in 1823 and remodelled in 1881, with restoration work completed between 1971 and 1973. The building features a classical facade highlighted by a central Gibbsian steeple. It is constructed of polished ashlar with coursed rubble on the side elevation and is a single storey structure with a five-bay facade facing north onto High Street. The central section is advanced and pedimented, comprising three bays that include a central door flanked by windows set in round-arched panels, which are accessed by a shallow flight of steps. The windows feature multi-pane glazing. The outer bays have a frieze, cornice, central pediment, and a low parapet. The central steeple is built on a square plinth and includes a clock stage with angle pilasters, an octagonal stage above with louvred openings, a slender facetted spire, and a weather vane.

In front of the school, there are a pair of early 19th century fluted stone piers on square bases with flat capitals that support draped urns, along with a pair of cast-iron gates. A low stone wall with cast-iron spearhead railings completes the setting.
