Description

St Gregory's Roman Catholic Church in Preshome, dated 1788 and likely designed by Father John Reid, features a chancel, altar, and some internal alterations made by Peter Paul Pugin in 1896. This rectangular church is oriented east-west and has a wide five-bay Baroque west front with flanking stair compartments. The exterior is harled with tooled and polished ashlar margins and dressings. The central entrance is wide and round-headed, flanked by similar entrances in slightly set back outer square stair bays. There are four substantial round-headed windows and a slightly smaller central window raised into a pedimented gable, all with keystones and blocked imposts. The shaped pedimented gable crowns the central three bays, featuring a deep eaves band, eaves cornice, and blocking course on three sides of the stair blocks, topped with urn and ball finials and an apex cross. A datestone is located above the central door, and the windows have multi-pane glazing.

The south elevation is wide with three bays, featuring a blocked round-headed central door and a window above it, along with flanking linear traceried windows added in 1896. The demi-octagonal chancel has similar traceried windows on the north and south sides, linked to narrow round-headed lancets by a continuous hood-mould and string course. The roof is slate.

Inside, the church has a lofty interior with brilliantly coloured stencilled decorations in the chancel, nave dado, and cornice. An ornate canopied, carved, and painted reredos features a picture of St Gregory and is fronted by a carved, varied coloured marble altar. There are carved coloured marble communion rails and flanking marble pedestals that support statues. Brass memorial plaques are located on the right and left in the chancel, and the floor is tiled with coloured tiles.

The rear organ platform, raised in 1896, is enclosed by curtained railings, and the church contains plain pews, Stations of the Cross, and a ribbed flat ceiling from 1896. The entrance lobby features a central ceiling rose from 1788.
