Description
Birkenbush is a house likely built between 1730 and 1740, possibly designed by master mason James Ogilvie. It is a 2-storey, 3-bay structure with a later addition of a single-storey, single-bay wing at the west gable. The exterior features modern render with contrasting painted rendered margins and presents symmetrical elevations on both the north and south sides.
On the south side, there is a central door flanked by widely spaced narrow windows. The north side has a central shaped gable that breaks the wallhead, featuring an attic window and a deep moulded cope at the apex stack. The outer bay ground floor windows are slightly enlarged and have modern slated canopies that detract from the appearance. A narrow window at the centre of the ground floor may have replaced a former entrance.
The glazing is varied throughout the building. There are substantial end stacks that are encased in modern render, a slightly bellcast slate roof, and small scroll skewputts. Inside, there are no notable features remaining as the interior was remodelled around 1950.
