Description
Rathven Parish Church, dated 1794, underwent repairs in 1823 by William Robertson, with a porch and vestry added in 1874, and alterations and re-casting by R M Fulton in 1932. This simple rectangular church features a four-bay south elevation, with harled walls and tooled ashlar margins and dressings. The south side has regular round-headed keystoned windows with blocked imposts, including a southwest window with a panelled gallery transom. There is a similar single gallery window in both the east and west gables, along with three round-headed windows added in 1932 on the rear elevation. A bellcote is located at the apex of the west gable, with a finial at the east, and the church has a slate roof.
The single-storey vestry, which has two bays and is dated 1874, extends from the west gable and is fronted by a gabled porch that provides access to both the church and the vestry. It features an end stack and also has a slate roof.
Inside, the church was re-cast in 1932 and includes fluted wooden columns, possibly with a cast-iron core, and a raised and fielded panelled gallery front that was reused from the 1794 church. The pulpit, added in 1932, faces the organ.
