Description
This is an early to mid-19th century range of buildings forming a U-shape, originally associated with the Findhorn Railway. The west-facing street frontage is symmetrical with seven bays, featuring a central, segmental-headed pend that leads to a rear court. The construction is of coursed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The central arch is flanked on either side by three-bay dwellings; the right-hand dwelling has a central door, while the left-hand dwelling has an off-centre entrance. The first-floor fenestration is arranged in corresponding groups, with some windows being blind. Most windows have 12 panes of glass.
The rear court is flanked to the south by a two-storey warehouse range, partially converted into a dwelling, with a large, segmental-headed arched entrance at ground floor level. To the north, there are two dwellings, one two-bay and one three-bay, differing in height and construction. The roofs are slate-covered, with coped ridge and end stacks.
The Findhorn Railway, which ran between Kinloss and Findhorn and operated briefly from 1860 to 1869, terminated in front of Station House, which originally served as a warehouse for the harbour, used for office space and storage. A small wooden ticket office once stood opposite, but has since been demolished. The building is now divided into several dwellings, with the warehouse section also being used as a dwelling. Further information can be found in Ian K Dawson’s The Findhorn Railway.
