Description
This is an early to mid-19th century range of buildings arranged in a U-shape, originally serving as Station House for the Findhorn Railway. The west-facing street frontage is symmetrical with seven bays, featuring a central segmental-headed pend leading to a rear court. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The central arch of the pend is flanked by three-bay dwelling sections – one on the right with a central door, and one on the left with an off-centre entrance. The first floor has matching window groupings, some of which are blind. The windows are predominantly 12-pane sash windows.
The rear court is flanked to the south by a two-storey warehouse range, partially converted into a dwelling, which has a substantial segmental-headed arched ground floor entrance. To the north is a combination of a two-bay and a three-bay dwelling, differing in height and construction. The roofs are slate-covered, with coped ridge and end stacks.
Opened in 1860, the Findhorn Railway, which ran between Kinloss and Findhorn, was short-lived, closing in 1869. The railway terminated in front of the Station House, which was originally a warehouse for the harbour and used as an office and storage space. A small wooden ticket office stood opposite, but it has since been demolished. The building is now divided into several dwellings. Reference: Ian K Dawson, THE FINDHORN RAILWAY, p.22.
